Yoga Teacher Training 200-Hour
In-Person June 22 - July 20, 2023
Yoga Training - Teach To Learn
Whether you are a serious student or certified yoga teacher, this program is designed to expand your knowledge of the theory and practices of Classical Ashtanga yoga. Guided and supported by a faculty of over 30 teachers, the 200 hour level training serves to systematically develop and enhance your understanding of yoga.
You will develop skills for teaching a well-rounded beginners level yoga class. This course is ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in an intense discipline to begin or to deepen a personal practice. Advanced techniques and theories are explored in many of our specialty classes.
Our 200-hour Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training is offered in two formats. The Modular version consists of one long weekend per month over six months which results in a paced program that can be completed alongside work and family commitments. Alternatively, the Summer Intensive meets for one full month of dedicated immersion and is suitable for those in a transition or with a summer break.
Please contact the Yoga Registrar for questions and enrollment assistance via email yoga@mountmadonnainstitute.org or directly at 408-846-4095. Thank you.

Why Mount Madonna?
Our Yoga Teacher Training focuses primarily on the systems of Ashtanga Yoga and Haṭha Yoga and the methods we teach include shat karma, mudra, pranayama, dhyana, and asana. The foundational theory that supports these practices is taught in classes on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Samkhya Philosophy, basic principles of Ayurveda, subtle body theory, anatomy, and physiology. Teaching methodology, or how to share this ancient knowledge is woven throughout the program.
The aim of our 200 hour training program is to assist you in deepening your understanding of the methods and philosophy of yoga, as a way to both strengthen your personal practice and to develop as a yoga instructor.
It is our intention that those who wish to teach have the tools to offer a beginning yoga class upon completion of the training, and to have a basic understanding of the vast background of this great science and spiritual practice.
Often in the West when we say, “I do yoga” it means, “I practice asana (postures).” In fact, the methods of yoga are multi-faceted and encompass a way of life leading to inner peace and liberation from the confines of desires, ego and attachments.
In our training at Mount Madonna, we draw from these ancient classical yoga teachings that have been passed down from teacher to student for thousands of years. Asana is one of many practices within this vast system of knowledge.
Throughout the 200 hour training thirty classical asanas will be practiced and studied daily. A breakdown of each posture includes:
- Proper alignment and biomechanics
- Manual adjustments
- Modifications and the use of props as needed
- Health benefits and contraindications
- Asana and Ayurveda– classification of asanas according to the three body humors (constitutions)
- Anatomy and physiology as related to asana
- Teaching methodology
- Designing a balanced class
- Teaching beginners with varying abilities
- Setting up classes in your community
- Evolving a personal teaching style
- Foundations for safe sequencing
