Sanskṛit Devanāgarī: Abode of Illumination

Presented by Bhavani Siegel

April 7th - May 26th, 2021

It is said that Devanāgarī is a ”revealed” language: heard within the depths of Vedic sages’ higher awareness, its sounds born from the sacred mantra, OM. Thus it is said to have a unique power and resonance. Within the path of Yoga - especially in the practice of Mantra Yoga - Sanskṛit holds energetic keys which are of benefit to both practitioners and teachers of Yoga.

If Yogic terminology or mantras are not written in transliteration - as is often the case - there is no way to know how to pronounce them in a way that fully utilizes their potential. Even with diacritical marks, the many different systems can be confusing.

In this course of 8 weekly classes, we will learn Devanāgarī, an elegantly consistent form of writing and pronunciation of the sacred language of Yoga.

For this Webinar, we will be using the Sanskrit Alphabet (Devanagari) Study Book Volume 1 Single letters and Sanskrit Alphabet (Devanagari) Study Book Volume 2 Conjunct consonants & Exercises on mantras and slokas by Medha Michika.

Presented by Bhavani Siegel

Bhavani has practiced Yoga since childhood. In 1974, she began her yoga practice with Baba Hari Dass (Babaji) and has taught yoga sādhana and philosophy since 1976. She's a Senior Teacher and part of Mount Madonna Center’s Yoga Committee, its Yoga Guidance Council, and a founding member of the Mount Madonna Center community. Bhavani’s teaching is focused on Prāṇāyāma, Meditation and Yoga Philosophy; specializing in Sanskṛit and Mantra Yoga, yogic ritual, and symbolism.

As a school teacher for 20 years, she incorporated yoga for children. Considering the teachings of conscious communication, an important aspect of the Yogic principle of non-harming, Bhavani integrated these disciplines as facilitator/coordinator of MMC’s Yoga, Service and Community residential program for over 20 years.

In Yoga Teacher Trainings, Retreats, and other workshops, Bhavani has continued her journey of “teach to learn” at MMC. She enjoys chanting, mystic poetry, and the solace of nature.
