Overview

Our mission is to train students for the Diploma – Ayurvedic Lifestyle Counselor, Certificate – Ayurvedic Practitioner, and Masters of Arts - Ayurveda through professional, academic and internship programs. Our goal is to provide students with the finest classical training in the principles and methods of Ayurveda, preparing students for professional careers in Ayurveda.

Originating in the ancient Vedic scriptures of India, the wisdom and practical health training of Ayurveda is a holistic complement to western medicine.  The College of Ayurveda was formed to meet the increasing demand for trained practitioners of alternative and complementary healthcare in the U.S., specifically Certified Ayurvedic Practitioners.

Our program includes theoretical instruction as well as practical training in herbal medicine making, Ayurvedic cooking, Ayurvedic bodywork, and Yoga, and clinical internships.  Our instructors are classically trained in India and/or have many years of clinical and teaching experience. Students have opportunities for personal experience in intuitive and spiritual aspects of Ayurveda and write papers and research projects. We specialize in integrating Ayurveda and Western Medicine.

Programs offered include  1) a Diploma – Ayurvedic Lifestyle Counselor (high school graduation or equivalent is a prerequisite, 7 months program),  2) a Certificate –  Ayurvedic Practitioner (Diploma is a prerequisites, 14 months program), and  3) a Master of Arts – Ayurveda (B.A. or B.S. and Certificate – Ayurvedic Practitioner are prerequisites, 9 months program, including internship).

Classes meet one three-day weekend per month, starting Thursday evenings and ending Sunday afternoons, and include experiential practica as well as academic sessions.  In addition, for the Credential – Ayurvedic Practitioner, two Anatomy and Physiology weekends must be taken prior to the start of the Certificate program in July.

The MMI College of Ayurveda curriculum is modeled on the B.A.M.S. Ayurvedic Medical School curriculum in India.  As is traditional in a college educational system, each course is taught by an expert in that subject and students gain a variety of perspectives on the vast subject of Ayurveda. In this way they develop their own understanding of the subjects, are tested in their knowledge, and gain the ability to think, reason and analyze for themselves, in the process gaining the ability to tap into their intuitive knowledge. With a variety of models to emulate, students become competent, confident and skilled Ayurvedic Practitioners with their own unique style.

MMI's Teaching Assistant staff are experienced Ayurvedic Practitioners. They create study guides, give homework, create and give quizzes and exams, teach review sessions, answer questions and teach Practicums each month. They are the glue which holds together the program as a whole.  They are skilled in comparing and contrasting the various approaches to Ayurvedic subject matter and exposing the students to practical knowledge and experience from their own Ayurvedic practices. Their aim is for the students to understand and experience the material in the deepest, most profound and clear way.

Since our program includes living and dining with fellow students during weekend programs and meeting in study groups between weekends, students have found that rather than being an intellectual and isolating experience, like they imagined a college experience might be, they have experienced increased self knowledge and community with fellow students. The Practicums and Review sessions are likewise times when students learn increase the depth of the educational experience.

We are pleased to offer these professional trainings which build on the fine Ayurveda programs which have been offered at Mount Madonna Center since 1978.
