Mount Madonna Insitute campus

Mount Madonna Insitute is located on 355 mountaintop acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains overlooking all of Monterey Bay, utilizing facilities provided by the Institute’s host, Mount Madonna Center.

The Institute is accessible via all-weather, paved roads, just one hour from San Jose International Airport and less than two hours from San Francisco International Airport. Commercial airporters, as well as Mount Madonna Center drivers, provide transportation from the baggage claim area of each airport directly to the Institute.

Housing accommodations include a wide range of options, from camping (in one’s own tent or a provided tent) to dormitories, double rooms with or without private baths, and single rooms again with or without private baths. Rooms are available in various settings, from a large building including over 30 rooms to small individual cabins in a more rustic setting. Staying in residence is not required – people with housing nearby are welcome to commute.

The property includes miles of hiking trails, a hot tub, massage facilities, an Ayurvedic herbs laboratory and shop, volleyball and tennis courts, a flower and vegetable garden, a book and gift store, a temple, a small lake for swimming, and a café. High quality vegetarian meals are provided in the cafeteria.

Solar collectors on the roofs of all major buildings provide all the electricity for those facilities. There is, too, considerable effort put into composting and recycling in the meeting areas, dining area, and residential areas. We invite students and guests to join us in our efforts to make our footprint on the earth a lighter one.

Our primary classroom for groups of less than 30 students is The Orchard Building, including a 28’x23’ classroom. This area includes a large deck overlooking a fine view, many windows for good natural lighting, a high ceiling, a small kitchen area in which teas, herbs, and snacks are provided, ceiling fans, blackboard and whiteboard areas, and various combinations of tables, chairs, backjacks, and cushions for seating. Also available at this location are overhead projectors, a sound system, and internet and skype availability.

For groups of more than 30 students, the Seminar House includes a 32’x28’ classroom, five residence rooms accommodating a total of up to 22 people, and a kitchen. The classroom includes large sliding glass doors onto a spacious deck overlooking a fine view of the bay, opening skylights, a high ceiling and ceiling fans, blackboard and whiteboard areas, and various combinations of tables, chairs, backjacks, and cushions for seating. Also available at this location are overhead projectors, a sound system, and internet and skype availability.

For much larger groups, the Conference Center includes a 52’x52’ classroom, a large courtyard with a spectacular view, a high ceiling and ceiling fans, blackboard and whiteboard areas, and various combinations of tables, chairs, backjacks, and cushions for seating. Also available at this location are overhead projectors, a sound system, and internet and skype availability.

Wi-fi is available in most of the main buildings and at the café, both indoor and out. A computer room is available at modest charges for those who have not brought laptops with which they can access wi-fi. An Ayurveda library is available in the Institute office.

The Kaya Kalpa Wellness Center is a two-story structure, the top floor of which includes a reception area and individual rooms for different types of massage sessions, and the bottom floor of which includes a second classroom area suitable for smaller groups. The building includes a complement of massage tables and all accompanying massage supplies, blackboard and whiteboard areas in the classroom, and overhead projectors and tables as needed. In addition, this building includes Ayurveda World, a complete herbal preparation laboratory, display area, and sales area.

A reminder: the hiking trails take you easily to beautiful redwood groves, lovely meadows, delightful vistas, and, perhaps most important, delicious quiet.
